The sermon on last Sunday at church by Dr. Rayburn was particularly good. It was on Matthew 20:1-16. The sermon is available in PDF and MP3. Here’s my quick summary:

Since the previous chapters were dealing with The Rich Young Ruler and his questions about salvation, we need to remember that that is still the topic. A man hires workers through out the day and pays them all the same amount, even the one’s hired an hour before closing. We tend to identify with those hired early who complained that they should have gotten paid more. This is a metaphor for our selfishness and feeling we deserve Heaven. God is free to be generous and we ought not resent it, because if we got what we deserved, it wouldn’t be good!

The clincher was this: Everyone in Hell will be certain that they deserve to be in Heaven, and everyone in Heaven with be sure (and correct) that they deserve to be in Hell. We must always remember to be surprised at God’s grace and not greedy.
