I don\’t like to blog about news articles I find on the internet, since there is no much rehashing that goes on in the blogosphere. But this time you should see this poster. Now, I love The Matrix but isn’t this a new low for Christianity? We are reduced to picking up the scraps of popular culture and drawing vague parallels. On the other hand, it is a cool poster (this is the highest resolution I could find online). We are called, none the less, to be apart from the world and not of it. Oh well!
church matrixSome of the things that I write may cause some people to think that I am against science. I have no qualms with letting it be known that I don’t believe in Evolution, nor do I believe in most of the ideas of Cosmology or Astrophyisics. I make these rejections more informed than most concerning the content and ideologies of these fields, I dare say. Initiates of the Cult of Science will be quick to produce ad-hominim insults, but I have a careful reply prepared. Be forewarned, however, this is not a rejection of science from within, but from without.
There are two silent partners to modern science that make it untenable. The principle of Uniformitarianism and Naturalism are by design, atheistic and not necessary. Naturalism is the belief that all phenomenon are explainable by Natural Laws. There are no exceptions, no miracles, no unique etiologies and nothing supernatural. Ever. Uniformitarianism is the belief that Natural Laws have been constant throughout all history and will remain so. Even many secular scientists are now puttering with the idea that the speed of light has changed over time. Nevertheless, these two philosophical parasites are deep-seeded and are perceived to be synonymous with modern science. However, they are just extensions of the express atheism of the so-called Enlightenment of the 18th century.
I am not against science, if science is not defined to include these atheistic attributes. They do not allow for the presence of God in the world, affecting events, now or in the past. If science is simply the observation of events and the proposing of hypotheses that adequately explain those events, then I am all for it. Evolution and Astrophysics, more than any other fields of science, have very little evidence and yet make the most wild, inventive and untestable claims. “Scientists” in these fields usually have done actual research into biology and quantum physics, respectively. But there is precious little in the way of evidence to be gathered and almost never a way to negate their outlandish theories. Establishing the means by which a guess can be contradicted is part of good logic. True science has always admitted that deductive logic is only good for a best guess, and even then, only when all things being equal.
I believe that all the things in Bible’s Genesis account are possible if God is above Natural Laws, i.e. their Creator. He is not constrained by them, but uses them to establish order. Man’s plunge into sins has corrupted the entire universe, starting the Law of Entropy. The speed of light used to be infinite and Carbon-14 used to not decay. Our observations about the past are severely limited because the Laws of Nature have changed.
creation scienceThe sermon on last Sunday at church by Dr. Rayburn was particularly good. It was on Matthew 20:1-16. The sermon is available in PDF and MP3. Here’s my quick summary:
Since the previous chapters were dealing with The Rich Young Ruler and his questions about salvation, we need to remember that that is still the topic. A man hires workers through out the day and pays them all the same amount, even the one’s hired an hour before closing. We tend to identify with those hired early who complained that they should have gotten paid more. This is a metaphor for our selfishness and feeling we deserve Heaven. God is free to be generous and we ought not resent it, because if we got what we deserved, it wouldn’t be good!
The clincher was this: Everyone in Hell will be certain that they deserve to be in Heaven, and everyone in Heaven with be sure (and correct) that they deserve to be in Hell. We must always remember to be surprised at God’s grace and not greedy.
